Sex Toys 101: A Beginner’s Guide

Sex is a primal need, something we think about as soon as we’ve secured food, shelter, and clothing. But, unlike our other basic needs, sex requires technically “no work”. Rather, it’s all pleasure: intense, amazing sensations that ripple across multiple physical and psychological dimensions. Particularly for us women, the feeling of “good sex” is timeless, bottomless, and endless. Remember in our favorite TV series “Sex and the City” how Carrie described sex as a “Zsa Zsa Zsu” feeling? And that expression nailed it! That’s exactly how good sex feels, also why we call our brand “ZaZaZu” – a safe space to elevate the intimacy journey for women.

However, as the sexual act itself requires two parties, women’s needs regarding the entire journey are different than men's needs. Sex may be easier to find for a woman, but good sex is not. This is partially because too many men have not been educated about the female body and what pleases us. Depending on his personality, background, and culture he may not even have any interest in pleasing us. Furthermore, did you know that 75% of women cannot reach climax through natural intercourse?! Lastly, sex education is globally patchy, which means many women—even the most credentialed and affluent ones—often have little or no knowledge of what lights their fires or gets their juices flowing. You may never have orgasmed at all, with or without a partner. Or you may have only experienced one type of orgasm (usually the external one), when in fact there are so many other types: anal, clitoral, erogenous, and combo. A toy helps you explore your own body, learning what turns you on and introducing you to new orgasm types that you may never have even imagined. If you have a partner or spouse, integrating the toy into your sessions brings new couple concepts, adventures, and sensations. The sex becomes better, so the bonds between you and your partner or spouse become tighter.

Recently, a 28,000-year-old phallus was found in Germany which is quoted as being the oldest known 'sex toy' ever found. Yes, sex toys date back to so many years but it is only now that we are comfortable discussing, buying, and using them.

It’s totally reasonable if you’re overwhelmed when shopping for sex toys. After all, there are so many kinds! From clit toys to bullets, to internal toys, to rabbits, wands, butt plugs and and more. Not to mention the differences in price, material, brand, and functionality. Between the high-tech, adorably small, and powerhouse versions. Did you know that there are over 15,000 articles in an average-sized sex toy shop?! Not to worry, we’re here to help you narrow down your next vibe purchase right here.

Orgasm 101:

Where do you want to go—and how do you want to get there?

Firstly—and it’s important to be totally honest with yourself here—ask yourself what you’re looking for. What matters most? Don’t hesitate to get down to the finest details: Are you looking for a hard and fast ride? Or a slow float on the clouds, reaching peaks here and there as you drift? How about mechanics and biology? Are you looking for external clit stimulation or internal? If internal, are you looking for girth, length, or both? What about form and function: are you looking for something adorably small and high tech to thrill, lift, and spark your entire body? Or are you looking for dynamite that can blow through the brick wall of your inhibitions? Or do you want something versatile enough to give you a surprise every session? Take your time, get exactly what you want, and don’t be afraid to curate your most erotic dreams.

Have a smooth ride

Secondly, we suggest buying a bottle of lube to make your sex toy experience even better. After all, it’s no use getting your engine red-hot if it’s painful to work the gears. So after you’ve got your toys, you’re going to want to get your lube on. While you can pick from water-based, silicone-based, or oil-based, we recommend water-based lubes as a general umbrella lube that’s safe for all sex toys and condom usage. (FYI, silicone-based and oil-based lubes can break down silicone toys and condoms). A good lube will make things way more pleasurable — if you’ve never lubed up before purposefully, prepare for your sex life to change.

Health & Safety Matter

Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, always practice good sex toy hygiene. You can wash your toys with soap and water, but if you really want to ensure a thorough sanitising, it’s best to pick up some sex toy cleaner.

Trying sex toys is definitely a big step to take, but one that is absolutely necessary to unlocking your potential in all sexual endeavours. Sex toys are the gateway to self-discovery and learning about our bodies Until you actually try a sex toy out for yourself, you'll be left wondering what you are missing. And trust me when I say that you are definitely missing a lot! So, take the plunge and watch your sexual pleasure rise to new heights! Once you do take that first step, you’ll be opening yourself to an entirely new world of amazing sexual experiences and pleasures!
